STEWARTON DRAMA GROUP OPEN EVENING

Wednesday 09 August 2017 from 7.30pm

STEWARTON DRAMA GROUP will open their 45th season on Wednesday 09 August 2017 with an Open Evening aimed at recruiting potential new members and new patrons. The club is always keen to meet people in the local area who are interested in any aspect of drama or theatre arts and the Open Evening will be a perfect opportunity for people to come along and find out more.

The Group meet on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in their own Premises, complete with a fully functional stage, rehearsal room, costume store, kitchen and lounge, in the Scout Building, Corsehillbank Street, beside the Tennis Courts in Stewarton.

Productions are cast by all interested Group members reading a section of the play script at a casting evening, so that the director can select the right actors and actresses for the parts. The Group then get to work on the technical side of the production where there is always plenty to do building the scenery, designing and painting the set, collecting or making the props, preparing the lighting and sound plans, and choosing the right costumes, music and stage make-up.

Season 2016-17 was a tremendous success for the Group. The season opened with an informal ‘New Members & Patrons Open Evening’ in August, which saw several new members join the club and go on to give their debut performance for SDG later in the year. The group’s annual Pantomime ‘Harry Potter and the Yellow Brick Road’ played to packed houses in the Stewarton Area Centre in December, and later in the season the group performed their memorable production of the hit comedy play ‘Ladies Day’ which delighted audiences in March. In addition to this, the group performed two further “in-house” productions in their Premises in September and May for the enjoyment of their loyal Patrons.

If all of that encourages you to find out more about getting involved next season, the Group are inviting anyone, over the age of 18, interested in local theatre to drop into their Premises in the town’s Corsehillbank Street on Wednesday 09 August from 7.30pm. This will be a great chance to come along, see round the Premises, have a chat with existing members, and find out more about the Group’s planned productions for the new drama season 2017-18, which opens with the murder mystery comedy thriller ‘A Tomb With A View’, directed by Nancy McPherson, which the group will perform in the Stewarton Area Centre on Thu 05 and Fri 06 October 2017 at 7.30pm.

Alternatively, for only £30 a year you can become a Patron of the award-winning Group and receive two tickets for each of their annual shows in the Stewarton Area Centre as well as a complimentary copy of the Group’s monthly newsletter ‘Cuelines’ and invitations to any in-house ‘Patrons Evenings’ that the group perform within their own Premises.

Drama Group President, Alison Barr said:

“We’d love to meet you if you are interested in any aspect of drama – whether you fancy treading the boards, helping out backstage, building scenery, working on lights and sound, making props or costumes, singing and dancing in our pantomime chorus, or simply supporting the Group by becoming a Patron – please come along and meet us on Wednesday 09 August in our Premises.

IN THE NEWS APRIL…Whoopee !!! Our “Excess Baggage” team are over the moon to have been placed THIRD overall in Scotland at the National Final of the SCDA One-Act Play Festival tonight !!! Only the 5th time ever that SDG have been placed in the top 3 !! We were also short listed in the top 3 plays considered for the Stage Presentation trophy, and short listed in the top 3 plays considered for the Best Theatrical Moment trophy for Morag’s delivery of the classic line…….”Who’s the Brazilian ? Seems he’s very busy……” !!!! We’re raising a very large glass to Team EB tonight – What an achievement !!! 3rd out of 132 plays !!!!

Stewarton Drama Group
will represent the West of Scotland at the National Final of the Scottish Community Drama Association’s One-Act Play Festival, at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre this week, with their multi-award winning production of ‘Excess Baggage’, written and directed by Ayrshire playwright Nancy McPherson.

The Stewarton team’s journey to the National Final began back in February, when they were placed First in Ayrshire at the first round of the competition in Kilmarnock’s Palace Theatre where the team also lifted the trophy for the Highest Marks in Acting. Following on from their win in Ayrshire, the team’s success continued when, for only the 4th time in their 40-year history, they were placed First in the Western Division from an original entry of 47 plays across the whole of West of Scotland, at the West of Scotland Final last weekend in the Denny Civic Theatre in Dumbarton, where the team also lifted the trophy for Best Stage Presentation.

This week at the National Final at the 550-seater Pitlochry Festival Theatre – recently described in the Herald as “the stylistic equivalent of a West End producing theatre set against a picture-postcard backdrop of rolling Perthshire hills” - the Stewarton team will compete alongside the top 7 plays in Scotland, performed by teams from as far afield as Lochcarron, Forfar and the Isle of Skye, for a single coveted place at the British Final of the competition in Derry, Northern Ireland this summer, and the chance to represent Scotland at the conclusion of this competition which started with an original entry of 132 plays from across the country.

This is only the 9th occasion in their 40-year history that Stewarton Drama Group have made it to the prestigious National Final of the competition. The Group have previously achieved third place overall at the National Finals in 2001 and 2004 with their productions of ‘Bar and Ger’ and ‘Murphy’s Law’ and second place overall at the National Final in 1986 with their production of ‘The Choristers’. In 2008 – in their most successful year to date – they won the National Final for the first time with their production of ‘One Good Beating’, which then also went on to win the British Final in Wales later that year.

The Group’s production of ‘Excess Baggage’ was first performed in Stewarton’s Area Centre back in May 2011 as part of their ‘Here Come the Girls’ production which raised £6,000 for The Ayrshire Hospice. The play follows six very different women who come together in the ‘Secret Sanctuary Health and Beauty Spa’. Four of them (played by Julie Blackburn, Caren McLean, Laura McPherson and Morag Smith) are carrying different kinds of ‘baggage’, and they hope to lighten their load with the help of the beauty therapist (Michelle Barnett) and the Pilates teacher (Alison Barr). The outcome reveals some home truths, some touching moments and ultimately some strong female bonding.

EB

Stewarton Drama Group – WINNERS of the West of Scotland Final of the SCDA One-Act Play Festival for only the 4th time ever in the 40 year history of our group ! Big congratulations to our Excess Baggage team who will be performing at the NATIONAL FINAL next week in Pitlochry alongside the other top 7 plays in Scotland out of an original entry of 132 plays across the country ! HERE COME THE GIRLS !

IN THE NEWS MARCH…

UPDATE
on the West of Scotland Final of the SCDA One-Act Play Festival which had to be put on hold, following the performance of the first 3 teams on Thu 21st March, due to severe weather conditions in Stranraer: The organising committee have worked hard to successfully reschedule the rest of the Festival for Sat 13th April and Sun 14th April in the Denny Civic Theatre in Dumbarton, where the remaining 6 teams will perform their plays in the competition. Great news, and best wishes to everyone involved ! :-)

Well, our ‘Excess Baggage’ team did themselves, SDG and Ayrshire proud last week at the West of Scotland Final of the SCDA One-Act Play Festival. The whole team agreed that it was definitely our FAVOURITE performance of our much-loved play. There was a fantastic audience out to support the Festival in the Ryan Theatre, Stranraer who really seemed to enjoy it and they gave us a great cheer… at the end!

Other teams performing on the same night were New Victory Players (representing Glasgow District) who performed ‘Forward to the Right’ by Lily Ann Green, and Thistle Theatre Company (representing Inverclyde District) who performed ‘The Trees They Grow So High’ by Tony Powell. The adjudicator commented that there was a very high standard overall last night to start off the Festival.

Unfortunately, very bad weather conditions in Stranraer resulted in the Ryan Centre and Theatre being taken over by the police as an emergency rescue centre for people in outlying villages without heat and electricity, and stranded ferry passengers, to stay over the weekend. The second and third nights of the West of Scotland Final of the SCDA One-Act Play Festival were therefore postponed  and a new date and venue will be announced asap. Results of the competition will therefore be a little bit later than expected….we’ll keep you posted !

A massive THANK YOU from our entire ‘Stepping Out’ team to everyone who came along to see our play this week. We were lucky enough to have a FABULOUS audience every night – your support and feedback is very much appreciated by all of us – s…o thank you all very much indeed. We hope to see you all again at our next production – “An Evening of Comedy & Drama” on Fri 24th & Sat 25th May back in the Stewarton Area Centre. Until then…….”Keeeeeeeep TAPPING !” :-)
